The City of Burlington is seeking professional consulting services for the design of a wall and/or fence surrounding the Union Cemetery located on Plains Road.

The City has recently taken over the care and maintenance responsibilities associated with Union Cemetery.  The Cemetery itself dates back approximately 175 years.  The existing brick wall dates back approximately 150 years.  The cemetery property and wall have been designated under the heritage act.

The goal of the design services is to present a minimum of two (2) designs of the wall/fence to be taken through the process of approval through the Heritage Burlington Advisory Committee (HBAC), obtain a Heritage Permit, and complete the drawings to a ‘Tender ready’ state.  The first option will be to re-build the wall to its original heritage state, while the subsequent option(s) shall look to find a balance of heritage features while striving to minimize surrounding impacts to the property, burial plots, trees and site features.

In addition, the City would like to complete a Stage 1 Archaeological Assessment of the property as this is a requirement of the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO).  The successful bidder will also assist the City in preparing the application for Cemetery Investigation Authorization (CIA) through BAO.
